About the Journal
Encyclopedia of Haitian Studies is a scholarly, peer-reviewed reference project dedicated to the concepts, debates, histories, and knowledge traditions that shape Haitian studies.
Published online at encyclopedia.charesso.org, the Encyclopedia brings together analytic entries written by specialists in Haiti and across the diaspora. Each entry is designed to be readable, source-grounded, and citable, offering both a clear definition of its topic and a structured map of the main debates, uses, and bibliographic landmarks.
Scope
The Encyclopedia publishes entries across a wide range of fields, including (indicatively): history and memory; politics and institutions; society and social movements; culture and the arts; literature; language and education; law and justice; economy and development; space and territory; urban studies; environment and risk; religion and spirituality; diaspora and migration; gender and feminism; health; theory and epistemology.
Proposals that expand Haitian studies through new objects, methods, or conceptual frames are welcome.
What we publish
Entries are analytical pieces (not short dictionary definitions). They clarify a topic, situate it in its key discussions, and provide a carefully curated bibliography. Depending on editorial planning, entries may focus on:
-
Concepts and categories
-
Themes and research problems
-
Institutions and public frameworks
-
Major events, controversies, or turning points
-
Intellectual traditions, methods, and theoretical debates
Languages and bilingual publication
The Encyclopedia is published simultaneously in English and French. Submissions may be made in English, French, Haitian Creole, or Spanish. When an entry is accepted, the editorial team coordinates the bilingual publication workflow. Spanish and Haitian Creole versions are planned as resources allow.
Citability and DOIs
Each published entry is assigned a DOI and formatted for stable citation in academic work. The Encyclopedia is designed as a durable bilingual knowledge infrastructure that supports research, teaching, and public scholarship.
Publishers
Éditions Charesso and Presses universitaires d’Haïti / Haiti University Press publish the Encyclopedia in collaboration with the Centre Haïtien de Recherche en Sciences Sociales.
